A Young Gentleman's Irresponsible And Abusive Drinking Results In A DUI And Time Incarcerated In Jail
Richard had an awfully difficult time keeping a job. In truth, due to his laziness and lack of drive, he was unemployed far more often than he was in a job situation. And when he did get employment, he had an exceedingly difficult time getting to work on time, he usually got less than acceptable performance reviews, and he called off sick so regularly that he typically got fired a week or two after he started working.
Not surprisingly, one of the outcomes of Richard's less than great employment track record was the fact that he was without much money much of the time. In spite of Richard's awful work track record and financial negligence, nevertheless, by some means he managed to drink in an abusive manner on an everyday basis.
So it came as no big surprise when Richard got arrested for a second DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was appalling and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to spend six months in the local jail.
During his time behind bars, Richard was required to learn more about alcohol facts such as alcohol related outcomes and alcohol deaths, about the damaging consequences of excessive drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol therapy. The judge underscored the fact that unless Richard gets professional alcohol treatment and learns how to live an alcohol-free life, he will most likely be spending quite a bit of his time incarcerated in jail.
Richard articulated that he understood what the judge was declaring but he still stated that incarceration was not the proper decision. The magistrate saw things differently and asserted that it was his professional job to keep alcohol dependent individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who receive a DUI. To substantiate this statement, the magistrate quoted some revered, extensively researched alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that pointed to some of the adverse consequences that are related to irresponsible drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Although Richard knew that he drank in a hazardous and irresponsible manner, he never thought that he was an individual who was dependent on alcohol. So it was a real shocker when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism signs and symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms approximately seven hours after getting locked up in the local jail.
To monitor his alcohol withdrawals in a safe manner, Richard was life flighted to an alcohol rehab hospital for alcohol detox and then returned to the city jail. While locked up in the county jail Richard received alcohol counseling but since he got this treatment as something that was imposed upon him, he did not take ownership of his excessive and hazardous drinking.
When his time in jail was finished, the judge without vacillation told Richard that he would be under strict scrutiny and would be mandated to take random alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard did not take ownership of his drinking problem and how he reluctantly followed the treatment procedures while in the county jail, the judge knew that it was essentially a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his irresponsible and abusive drinking behavior.
As the magistrate thought about Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some people never use their intellect and discover how to live in a responsible and accountable manner.
